Schmidt begins this volume by providing definitions of terms, which are subsequently used in later chapters to explain technical automotive concepts. General information about the various hybrid concepts is followed up with detailed explanations of the different powertrain topologies. In these explanations, Schmidt provides practical examples for the theoretical concepts. He also explains the operating principles of the relevant powertrain systems and highlights differences in the design of the various systems. A large part of the book is also dedicated to the design and operation of the high-voltage system as a whole – supplemented by individual examinations of the most important components of the high-voltage system.

In the practical section of the book, Schmidt focuses on maintenance and testing of high-voltage vehicles. This section covers topics such as isolating the high-voltage system and equipotential bonding. Schmidt has extensively revised the chapters on servicing of the air-conditioning system, measurement strategies for isolation monitoring, 48-volt mild hybrids and fuel cell electric vehicles. The book is rounded off by new chapters on performing a leakage test on high-voltage batteries and on safety equipment in hybrid and electric vehicles, as well as a look ahead into the future.
